Many Lagosians have taken to filling stations in unusually large numbers, with jerrycans, to purchase petrol.
The development is as a result of the petrol scarcity that persists in the country due to what regulators have described as efforts to recall “contaminated products” in circulation.
On February 9, Mele Kyari, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, accused suppliers of importing petrol with methanol content above Nigeria’s specification into the country.
Following the development, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered that “producers and providers” of the off-spec petrol must be held accountable.
On Thursday, TheCable went round Lagos streets to document how Nigerians are buying the product in jerrycans.
While some filling stations prohibited the sale of petrol in jerrycans, those who sold charged as high as N1,000 per empty 25kg keg before attending to buyers.
