Nigeria’s Blessing Oborududu defeated Canada’s Morais Linda to claim the gold medal in the women’s wrestling in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The world’s number two wrestler beat Morais 5-1 to the first position in the 68kg category at the Coventry Arena on Friday evening.
This is Oborududu’s second gold medal at the Commonwealth Games — her first was at the Gold Coast in Australia in 2018.
The wrestler had an easy ride over India’s Kakran Divya in the quarter-final with an 11-0 win, while in the round of 16, she easily dispatched off Nyeh Ngiri of Cameroon 10-0.
The 33-year-old made an easy meal of Cocker Lemalie in the semi-final with a 10-0 win.
Kolawole Esther Omolayo also claimed a bronze medal for Nigeria in the 62kg women’s freestyle category.
She defeated Scotland’s Fountain Abbie 10-0 to book a place on the podium.
Oborududu’s feat comes at about the same time when Nigeria’s Odunayo Adekuoroye defeated India’s Malik Anshu to clinch gold in the women’s freestyle wrestling.
Nigeria has now won 15 medals — 7 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze.
