Newspaper Headlines: Cameroon dam flood to hit states in seven days, says FG

Reports on the three-year economic revival plan of the federal executive council (FEC), and the planned release of water from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon, permeate the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that FEC has unveiled a three-year economic revival plan to address the social and economic challenges affecting the country. The newspaper reports the federal government as saying that all the frontline states on the path of River Benue may experience flooding within the next seven days as a result of the opening of Lagdo dam.

The Nation says the rift between Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, and his deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, has worsened. The newspaper says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a reduction in the number of federal government officials that will attend foreign events on government’s sponsorship.

THISDAY reports that Tinubu has asked ministers to focus on reviving Nigeria’s ailing economy. The newspaper says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticised the administration of Tinubu, saying the country is gradually grinding to a halt.

The Guardian reports that many state governors are still in the business of appointing a large number of aides, amid calls for reduction in the cost of governance. The newspaper says the Lagos house of assembly has insisted on its decision to reject 17 commissioner nominees of Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of the state.

Vanguard reports that Julius Abure, national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), said Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the last elections, will soon be declared president of the country. The newspaper says KPMG has adjusted its growth forecast for the Nigerian economy to 2.65 percent in 2023 — down from the 2.85 percent earlier projected.
