Reports on the violent protests over the scarcity of naira notes dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the growing anger over the scarcity of cash took a violent dimension on Wednesday as protesting customers burnt down banks and destroyed automated teller machines (ATMs) in Edo and Delta states. The newspaper says Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, was absent at the presidential rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which took place in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The Nation says the federal government has asked the states that filed a suit at the supreme court over the phase-out of the old naira notes to withdraw it. The newspaper reports that Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers state, said Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of the APC, turned down offers to work against the reelection of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019.

Daily Independent reports that the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) said it would announce its preferred presidential candidate in a matter of days. The newspaper says the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) has extended the registration of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to February 22.

Daily Trust reports that the federal government and states are considering out-of-court settlements of the litigation trailing the naira redesign policy. The newspaper reports that one Muhammad Tasiu has been arrested by vigilantes in Zuba town in the federal capital territory for allegedly providing logistics to bandits.

THISDAY reports that President Muhammadu Buhari was considering recirculating the old N200 notes to ease the pains brought by the naira scarcity. The newspaper says the consumer price index (CPI), which measures the rate of change in prices of goods and services, surged to 21.82 percent in January 2023, up from 21.34 percent in the previous month.
