Newspaper Headlines: FG to begin 40% pay rise for workers ahead of petrol subsidy removal

The strike embarked upon by aviation workers dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the federal government will begin payment of the planned increase in civil servants’ pay by the end of April 2023. The newspaper says striking aviation workers have rejected the plea of the federal government and threatened a total shutdown.

Daily Trust reports that supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa have issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to resume collation of results in the supplementary governorship election in the state. The newspaper says a high court in Abuja has declined the order to vacate the interim order restraining Julius Abure from acting as the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP).

Daily Independent reports that the federal government may spend more than $800 million earmarked for palliative after the planned removal of petrol subsidy. The newspaper says officials of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) visited the national secretariat of the Labour Party (LP) in Abuja to show solidarity with Abure.

THISDAY reports that Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has approached a federal high court in Abuja for leave to file an application for judicial review of the decision taken by INEC in respect of her declaration as the winner of the Adamawa governorship election. The newspaper says the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has granted registration approval for the R21 malaria vaccine.

Daily Sun reports that INEC has asked Hudu Yunusa-Ari, the resident electoral commissioner (REC) in Adamawa, to stay away from its office in the state. The newspaper says a kidnapper allegedly buried a three-year-old boy alive after collecting ransom.
