Newspaper Headlines: Nigeria’s oil production crashes to 900,000 b/d

Reports on the internal crisis in the two major political parties in the country — the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says the federal government granted N16.79 trillion tax relief and concessions to large companies between 2019 and 2021. The newspaper says Nigeria’s crude oil output fell to 900,000 barrels per day in August.

The Nation says the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the house of representatives have scheduled a meeting for Tuesday in order to resolve the seven-month-old strike. The newspaper reports that PDP governors are mounting pressure on Nysesom Wike to stop the agitation for the resignation of Iyorchia Ayu, the party’s national chairman.

Daily Trust reports that Bello Turji, the notorious bandit kingpin, escaped an airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). The newspaper says some masquerades invaded a church in Shikal village in Langtang south LGA, Plateau and flogged worshippers, including the pastor.

Daily Independent says multiple and illegal charges have stifled air cargo export and import in Nigeria. The newspaper reports that Nigerians have sued the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over failure to allow them complete their online voter registration.

Daily Sun says the APC is facing a dilemma on how to wriggle out of its internal crisis to facilitate the national executive council (NEC) meeting and ratification of the campaign council list of Bola Tinubu, its presidential candidate. The Labour Party said linking Peter Obi, its presidential candidate, with the activities of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is laughable.
