Newspaper Headlines: NNPC may need N201bn worth of clean petrol to blend off-spec product

The controversy surrounding the importation of off-spec petrol into the country dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Nation reports that some of the organisations accused by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) of importing off-spec petrol have denied culpability. The newspaper says 18 out of 22 members of the Zamfara house of assembly have voted in support of a motion seeking to impeach Mahdi Aliyu, the deputy governor.

The Punch reports that gunmen killed five policemen in Enugu and Oyo states. The newspaper says the NNPC may need an estimate of N201 billion worth of clean product to bring the 170.25 million litres of off-spec petrol imported to the country up to standard.

Daily Independent says President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that suppliers of the off-spec petrol be held accountable. Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno, said 30,000 terrorists have surrended to the military, the newspaper reports.

The Guardian reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced its plan to stop selling foreign currency to commercial banks by the end of 2022. Buhari has asked diplomats not to interfere in the 2023 elections, the newspaper says.

Daily Trust reports that the reconciliation committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has not submitted its report despite 15 days to the party’s national convention. Mai Mala Buni, governor of Yobe, says the state will need over N2 billion to revitalise education owing to the destruction caused by insurgents, the newspaper reports.
