Reactions by Nigerians to the nationwide broadcast by President Muhammadu Buhari on the naira redesign policy dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch says Nigerians were disappointed by the nationwide broadcast by President Muhammadu Buhari on the lingering crises created by the naira redesign policy. Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, said the naira redesign policy is a plot to scuttle elections and install interim government, the newspaper reports.


Daily Trust reports that Abdullahi Ganduje, governor of Kano, has alleged that the naira redesign policy was aimed at truncating Nigeria’s democracy. The newspaper says Nyesom Wike, governor of Rivers, said he has foreclosed reconciliation with Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).


The Nation says President Buhari has been criticised for flouting the supreme court order on the validity of the N1,000, N500 and N200 notes as legal tender. The newspaper reports that a pre-election poll conducted by the Nigerian Human Rights Community (NHRC) has projected Bola Tinubu, presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) to win.


The Guardian says some civil society organisations have asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to postpone the forthcoming elections. The newspaper reports that 404,106 security personnel would be deployed for the February presidential poll.


Vanguard reports that President Buhari has directed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to arrest and prosecute saboteurs of the naira policy. The newspaper says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to release hoarded naira notes.
