Newspaper Headlines: Workers lament non-payment of salaries by states

Reports on the issues affecting Nigerian workers, especially delay in the payment of salaries and wages, dominated the cover pages of Nigerian newspapers.

The Punch reports that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has not made any remittance on federal allocation since the beginning of the year as states reneged on payment of salaries and pensions. The newspaper says labour unions have demanded better deals and an increase in salary from the government.

Daily Independent says the rising inflation of prices of goods and services has weakened the purchasing power of Nigerians. The newspaper reports that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has begged labour leaders to intervene in the conflict between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Nigerian Tribune says ministers in the cabinet of President Muhammadu Buhari with political ambitions in 2023 have refused to resign as stipulated in section 84 (12) of the electoral act. The newspaper reports that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has warned that no political party will hold primaries until ASUU ends the ongoing strike.

The Guardian reports that President Muhammadu Buhari’s address at the May Day event was silent on the ongoing ASUU strike. The newspaper says police have banned political campaigns at Eid praying grounds in Kwara and Gombe.

Daily Sun reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved automatic senatorial tickets for outgoing governors. The newspaper says Nigeria has signed an agreement with Cuba on vaccine production.
