The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted 48-hour rainfall over parts of the federal capital territory (FCT) and 24 states from Thursday to Friday.
The agency made the prediction in its weather forecast released on Wednesday.
NiMet said there will be moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Plateau, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Niger, Nasarawa, Kogi, Enugu, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states.
Other states are Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Ebonyi, Kwara, Benue and the FCT.
The agency said this could lead to flash floods and strong winds.
“Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected within the forecast period of Thursday 28th and Friday 29th, September 2023,” the forecast reads.
“The moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to cause some flash flooding over their areas of occurrence.
“Strong winds should accompany the rains with the strongest winds expected over parts of Adamawa, Borno, Gombe, Bauchi, Yobe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Kebbi States.
“Strong winds are a threat to weak structures, trees, and masts. Disconnect electrical appliances before and not during the rains.”
The agency warned residents of the concerned states to avoid driving through surface runoff water because of strong undercurrents.
